Top 3 Spanish dishes you should try

If you are in Spain, we would strongly advise you to travel to all the different regions and try as many famous Spanish dishes as possible. Spanish cuisine is one of the things we most love about Spain. Here is our list of 3 must-try famous Spanish dishes to eat while in Spain.

Paella

Let’s be honest, no visit to Spain is complete without tasting paella. It’s one of the most famous and traditional rice dishes in Spain and is known as Spain’s national dish. This iconic dish originates from the Spanish region of Valencia but is now eaten all over the country (“Famous Spanish Food That Will Make You Adore Spanish Cuisine”, 2020). If you’re travelling in Spain you will see that there are various paella types to meet each taste, however, there’s only one authentic Valencian paella made with rabbit and chicken. Many say that the key to the Paella is the saffron. The saffron gives the rice its color which is why you’ll easily be able to spot paella in restaurants by the bright yellow rice (“Paella in Spain – A Guide to Eating Spanish Rice”, 2019).

Gazpacho

There’s no better way to cool down during a hot Spanish summer than with a bowl of gazpacho. Gazpacho is best described as a cold tomato soup, however, this definition doesn’t do gazpacho justice. The idea of eating cold tomato soup might sound a little odd, but once you’ve enjoyed it on a hot summer’s day, we promise you’ll be obsessed! Gazpacho is beloved by all Spaniards and is one of the best tomato soups in the world (“Top 10 Spanish foods with recipes”, 2020). A true gazpacho is made from tomatoes, cucumber, red peppers, garlic, bread, and olive oil blended into a smooth liquid (Storm, 2020). It’s so delicious and refreshing that Spaniards in southern Spain have it every day in summer!

Patatas bravas

Patatas bravas or “brave potatoes” are a staple part of the small dishes that make up a classic tapas menu in Spain. The dish is named after its spicy sauce, which is rare in a country that generally avoids hot food. Patatas bravas vary quite a bit around the country, however all versions involve lightly fried and cubed potatoes. The sauce can come in various ways, from spicy ketchup to garlic mayonnaise with a little bit of smoked paprika, or both. In Madrid, for example, the sauce is made with sweet and spicy paprika, olive oil, flour, and stock (Storm, 2020).
